When Emma walked into the small shop in Chinatown, she wasn’t expecting much. A red sign said “BaZi Fortune Telling – Know Your Destiny.” Inside sat an old man with kind eyes and a cup of green tea steaming beside him.
“Your birth date and time?” he asked gently.
Emma hesitated, then gave it: October 3rd, 1995. 7:30 AM.
The old man smiled and began writing. Four vertical columns appeared on his sheet—one for the year, month, day, and hour of her birth. Each column had two Chinese characters: one from the Heavenly Stems, and one from the Earthly Branches.
“These are your Four Pillars,” he said. “Your BaZi. Together, they form a map of your energy at the moment you were born.”
Emma leaned in, fascinated.
He explained, “Each pillar represents a part of your life:
- The Year Pillar shows your ancestors and early environment.
- The Month Pillar reflects your parents, youth, and career.
- The Day Pillar—your true self, and your spouse.
- The Hour Pillar speaks of your children, dreams, and future.”
As he spoke, he circled her Day Master—a Wood element. Then pointed to how her chart had strong Metal energy, which weakens Wood.
“You’re naturally creative and kind,” he said, “but you often feel pressure or criticism, especially in work. That’s Metal draining your Wood.”
Emma’s eyes widened. That described her perfectly.
“But look here,” he said, pointing to the Hour Pillar. “In your future, Fire and Earth appear. Fire strengthens Wood—your confidence will grow. Earth brings stability. Your 30s will be your turning point.”
For the first time, Emma felt like someone saw not just who she was—but who she could become.
